Atim Annette Oton, a Nigerian-born, American and British-educated designer, has transitioned into a curator and currently serves as the director and curator of Calabar Gallery in New York. With a background as the African Art Curator for AMREF Health Africa ARTBALL and as an advisor to The David Prize and The Downtown Biennial, Atim brings a wealth of experience to her role. Raised in Calabar, Nigeria, she pursued architecture studies at the City College of New York and completed graduate studies at the Architectural Association Graduate School in London, England. Her career in New York began in architecture, where she played a pivotal role in the design team that secured the African Burial Ground Interpretive Center project. Subsequently, she held the position of Associate Chair of Product Design at Parsons School of Design before venturing into entrepreneurship, establishing her retail company in 2006 and founding Calabar Gallery in 2016.  At Calabar Gallery, Atim represents underserved artists from diverse backgrounds, including African, African American, and Caribbean artists. The gallery's mission is to provide a space for community engagement, exhibitions, creative initiatives, and projects on both local and global scales. Atim is also actively involved in organizing the Harlem Arts Stroll and the Crown Heights Arts Stroll, and she oversees the Calabar Gallery Arts Residency at coLAB Arts in New Brunswick, the Calabar Gallery Arts Residency at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in Manhattan, and the Calabar Gallery Arts Residency at Cannes Brulees Rum Factory in Grenada. Her commitment to fostering artistic talent and community development is evident in her multifaceted contributions to the cultural landscape.
